John de Soyres Memorial Chess Tournament
Saturday, October 15, 2022, 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
The Rev. John de Soyres (1847-1905) was Rector of Stone Church in the late 19th century. Upon his arrival in Saint John in 1887, as a chess master of broad experience, he inaugurated "The Saint John Chess Club Challenge". In 1888, he was the first winner of the de Soyres Cup. Until 1903, the tournament attracted distinguished chess players who wanted to have their names engraved on the coveted trophy.
The John de Soyres Memorial Chess Tournament is an open invitation to anyone who plays chess. Tables will be arranged in the main part of the church (nave) and the general public will be able to see the action from the balcony. The winner will have his/her name engraved on a new trophy and receive a plaque as a keep-sake. The original de Soyres Cup will be on display for all to see.
