Joseph is Falsely Accused: Joseph in the House of Potiphar (A Bible Study on Genesis 39)

10/25/2022

Genesis 39 (Click to Read)
Teacher: Terence Chandra

In last week's Bible Study, we talked about how Joseph- one of the youngest sons of the Jewish patriarch, Jacob- is sold into slavery by his brothers. Taken by Ishmaelite traders to the land of Egypt, Joseph finds himself in the service of Potiphar- a high ranking official in the court of Pharaoh. For a while, Joseph prospers. His loyalty and competence earns him the trust of his master and, as a result, Joseph is given complete control over the entire household. However, Joseph's luck doesn't hold out. Once again, he is betrayed- falsely accused by Potiphar's wife of trying to assault her. Today, we take a closer look at this story of betrayal.

The Death of the Dreamer and the End of the Dream: Joseph is Sold into Slavery by His Brothers (a Bible Study on Genesis 37:12-34)

The Death of the Dreamer and the End of the Dream: Joseph is Sold into Slavery by His Brothers This marks the second Bible Study in a series centred around Joseph- the 11th son of the great Jewish patriarch, Jacob. Joseph is often called "the dreamer" because he is a man whom God has given special vision and insight. Joseph's dreams, however, often get him into trouble. Indeed, Joseph has at least two dreams where his family members (his eleven brothers, mother and father) all bow down to him. Naturally, his family is threatened by this dream- especially his older brothers who most certainly DON'T want to bow down to young Joseph. So, in order to eliminate the threat of this dream, Joseph's brothers decide to eliminate the dreamer himself - Joseph.

September 25, 2022 - The Prophet Ezekiel on Individual Retribution: A Sermon on Ezekiel 18

Ezekiel 18 (Click to Read)
Preacher: Terence Chandra

This talk marks the second in a sermon series on the vision statement of Stone Church: "The heart of Christ in the heart of the city."

Today, we focus on the issue of "generational poverty"- a term which is used to describe the pattern on successive generations of the same family dealing with the same problems (abuse, unemployment, addiction, mental health issues, etc.).  Is someone who is born into a situation of instability destined to struggle with the same issues as his or her parents?  Or can the pattern be broken?  That's the question that we'll be exploring in our sermon today as we take a closer look at Ezekiel 18.

Here, the prophet Ezekiel addresses a common proverb of the day: "The parents have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge."  Ezekiel isn't particularly fond of this saying, for reasons that will be made clear in the sermon.

Joseph's Dangerous Dream (a Bible Study on Genesis 37:1-11)

10/3/2022

Genesis 37:1-11 (Click to Read)
Preacher: Terence Chandra

Today's Bible study marks the first in a Bible study series on Joseph (son of Jacob, grandson of Isaac, and great-grand son of Abraham). Joseph is the eleventh son of a family consisting of 13 children (12 sons and 1 daughter). In terms of the family hierarchy, Joseph is low on the pecking order. However, Joseph happens to be the favourite son of Jacob, largely because he happens to be the first son of his favourite wife. Not only that, but Joseph is a young man of peculiar vision, insight and wisdom. In today's reading, Joseph tells his family of some interesting dreams he's been having lately. In one dream, he is binding sheaves with his brothers in the field when, all of a sudden, their sheaves bow down to his. In another dream, he sees the sun, the moon and eleven stars, all bowing down to him. In both dreams, Joseph sees himself ascending to greatness in his family. Naturally, this angers his brothers and makes Joseph the victim of a cruel plot.

September 11, 2022 - For the Welfare of the City: a Sermon on Jeremiah 29

Jeremiah 29:1-14  (Click to Read)
Preacher: Terence Chandra

This marks the first in a sermon series on the vision statement of Stone Church: The Heart of Christ in the Heart of the City. To kick off this preaching series, we'll be taking a closer look at Jeremiah 29:1-14. This excerpt from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah is actually a letter to the Jews living in exile in the land of Babylon. Jeremiah informs his audience that, unfortunately, they'll be in exile in Babylon for a long time. However, he also tells him that God has a purpose for them while in Babylon. That purpose is to seek the welfare of the city to which they've been sent. It could easily be argued that, just as the Jews were sent as exiles to the land of Babylon, so too have the people of the church been sent into cultural exile here in the west. Needless to say, what Jeremiah says about God's will for the Jews in Babylon can teach us a lot about God's will for the church in the west.

Justification, Sanctification and the Woman Caught in Adultery: a Bible Study on John 8:2-11

5/13/2022

JOhn 8:2-11 (Click to Read)
Teacher: Terence Chandra

It may come as a surprise to some that one of the most beloved stories in the Bible (the story of Jesus and the adulterous woman) cannot be found in the earliest manuscripts of John's Gospel. In fact, in most translations of the Bible, there is a textual notation written in the margins attesting to this fact. (Just look up the story in John 8:2-11 of your Bible and you'll see for yourself). However, there is good reason to believe that the story of the adulterous woman DOES date back to the time of Jesus. First, there are signs that the story was based on eyewitness testimony. Secondly, there are a couple of early Christian authors whose writings betray a knowledge of this story even though it did not appear in any gospel manuscripts of their time. For these reasons, many are content to view this story as canon. More importantly, though, this story beautifully communicates the mercy and compassion that dwells in the heart of the Saviour. It also has a lot to teach us about the theological concepts of justification and sanctification. Like all forgiven sinners, the woman in this story has been justified (that is, declared innocent in God's court of law). However, she is also sent off by Jesus to be sanctified (that is, to grow in holiness and love).

April 24, 2022 - Why Should Thomas have believed? A sermon on John 20:19-31

John 20:19-31 (Click to Read)
Preacher: Terence Chandra

Why Believe in the Resurrection of Christ? Belief in the resurrection of Christ is the central event of the Christian story- the ground and basis for our hope. But why do we believe it? The answer to that question is found, among other places, in the story of Jesus' appearance to Thomas in the upper room. This is the passage of scripture we'll be looking at in this sermon.

John 20:1-18 (Click to Read)

An empty tomb, a missing body, a weeping woman: These are all well known features of the Easter Story. In this sermon, Jasmine takes a deeper look into the darkness of that tomb and into the deeper hope that lies beyond it.
