Preacher: Carolyn Westin

Questions for Personal and Small Group Considerations on the Sunday Gospel Reading (John 14:23-29) taken from the Serendipity Bible:
  • How are the disciples to show love to each other (13:34)? To Jesus (14:15)? Why is the idea repeated four times (vv. 15,21,23-24)?
  • What do you learn about the Holy Spirit in verses 16-17 and 25-27? What is the relationship of the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to the believer? To each other?
  • What is the difference between how Jesus gives peace and how the world’ does?
  • How at home are the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in your life? Are they more like owners or temporary guests?
  • How has the Holy Spirit revealed Jesus in your life?
  • Of all the promises made here (vv. 16-18,21,23,26-27) which ones mean the most to you? Why?

John 17:20-26 (Click to Read)
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

Questions for Personal and Small Group Considerations on the Sunday Gospel Reading (John 17:20-26) taken from the Serendipity Bible:
  • Who is the focus of Jesus’ prayer in verses 20-26? Toward what end? What kind of unity exists between Jesus and God that we should copy?
  • What does Jesus’ ultimate desire (v. 24) reveal about his love for us?
  • How do verses 25-26 sum up the major concerns of Jesus in chapters 13-16?
  • This week, whom have you glorified by the way you lived? How so?
  • How are your prayers for others like and unlike Jesus’ prayer? Do your prayers reflect the short-term or the long-term important needs that people have? What can you apply to your prayer skills from this chapter?
  • How does the fact that Jesus existed before the world began affect the way you live?
  • How important to you is unity with other believers? With whom do you share this unity? How can you experience more unity?

John 10:22-42 (CLick to Read)

Our apologies for the poor sound quality of this track!
Questions for Personal and Small Group Considerations on the Sunday Gospel Reading (John 10:22-42) taken from the Serendipity Bible:
  • Given the meaning of the Feast of Hanukkah (when Jews remember their deliverance during the Maccabean revolt, 168-165 BC), what feelings about Rome’s authority might surface among the crowds? How would Roman authorities prepare for this feast? What might be the real intent of the Pharisees’ question in verse 24?
  • How do the leaders interpret Jesus’ claim to be one with God? How does Jesus sidetrack them (v. 34; Ps. 82:6)?
  • What could account for the difference in reception Jesus received across the Jordan (vv. 40-42)?
  • What has convinced you that Jesus is the Messiah? What “old ways” of looking at Jesus must you overcome by faith?

John 20:19-31 (Click to Read)
Preacher: Debbie Collicott

Questions for Personal and Small Group Considerations on the Sunday Gospel Reading (John 20:19-31) taken from the Serendipity Bible:
  • Why are the disciples fearful now?
  • Of all the things Jesus must have said, why does John record “peace be with you” three times (vv. 19,21,26)? How does this relate to their fears? To their being sent?
  • How does Thomas’ personality compare to Mary’s (v. 13)? To the other disciples (vv. 9,19)?
  • How does Jesus deal with Thomas’ doubt (v. 29)? What is significant about the way Thomas responds? How did your first confession of Christ’s lordship sound?
  • What is the author’s purpose in writing this gospel (vv. 30-31; 21:24-25)?
  • Where could you use Jesus’ peace right now: In some relationship? In some inner fear? In your work?

Easter 2019 - Group Life at the Tomb

Preacher: John Paul Westin
Luke 24:1-12 (Click to Read)

Questions for Personal and Small Group Considerations on the Sunday Gospel Reading (Luke 24:1-12) taken from the Serendipity Bible:
  • How do you think the women felt when they:
    • found the tomb empty?
    • realized two angels were standing beside them (v. 4)?
    • heard the angels’ announcement (vv. 5-7)?
  • How did the disciples receive the news when the women told them about the empty tomb?
  • Why would Peter want to go see for himself? What must have been going through his mind after he reached the tomb and saw that Jesus’ body was not there?
  • How did the meaning of the Resurrection first “dawn” on you? What difference does the Resurrection make on the way you live your life?
