Reign of Christ: Jesus’ Sheep and Goats

11/26/2017

Matthew 25:31-46
Preacher:  Coralie Losier

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. From this parable on what basis are people divided into sheep and goats? (beliefs, actions, character, treatment of others).
  2. Thinking of this parable how would you feel if you were placed in the group of sheep?
  3. Does this story feel more like a parable or a prophecy? Why?
  4. List the six actions Jesus will use as the basis of judgement. What kinds of actions are these? For whom are they done, now and ultimately (v. 40)? How do they benefit the doer?
  5. How are those who don’t do the actions and those that do them similar?
  6. How were Jesus and his opponents different in actions and attitudes?
  7. Is the judgement noted in this section consistent with your view of Jesus? Why or why not?

Outward Practices:  Simplicity and Solitude

11/19/2017

James 3:1-12
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. Why is it such a big responsibility to be a teacher, especially of the Scripture?
  2. What do the examples of the bit, rudder and fire teach about the importance of watching what we say?
  3. In light of verse 8, what hope do we have in relation to controlling our tongues?
  4. In your everyday conversation, how seriously do you take verse 9?
  5. Jesus and the apostles Peter and Paul were not always very “tame” when it came to the tongue. When is harsh language acceptable?
  6. How do verses 2 and 10 make you feel about your tongue? How will they prompt you to pray?

We experienced technical issues with the microphone so please excuse the poor sound quality.

Matthew 4: 9-11
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. When have you been alone in the "desert"? How can it help to know that Jesus has been there?
  2. What is the difference between being lonely and being alone?
  3. If the devil were to target you for temptation, which area of your life would he focus on? Physical temptations, financial temptations, ambition/power, your self-identity, your relationships, other things?
  4. When do you find yourself most vulnerable to the tempter? When you are tired or under stress, when you're alone, after a spiritual high, when you're not expecting it, when you let your mind dwell on certain things?
  5. How do you deal with temptation? Give in to it, fight it off, ask for God's help, beat yourself up with guilt, get your mind off it, talk to someone about it?
  6. What has helped you overcome temptation when it comes? Scripture, telling someone about it, talking yourself out of it, prayer, running away?
We also had a talk from Nigel Bone, the Director of Safe Harbour, an organization which we support.  Again, please excuse the poor sound quality.

Matthew 5:38-48
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

  2. What in the woman’s request of Jesus (vv. 20-21) shows that the disciples'’ view of the kingdom was different from Jesus? Of what are she (and they) ignorant?
  3. In order to share in his kingdom what “cup” must the disciples share with Jesus (vv. 18-19)?
  4. Why were the other ten disciples so outraged?
  5. What contrast does Jesus set up between the Gentile kingdom and God’s kingdom? How does Jesus model this new way?
  6. What specific ways can you serve people using Jesus as your model? Jesus was always saying or doing the unexpected (vv. 26-28). What has he told you that you did not expect?
