Being Well-Shepherded

4/22/2018

John 10:1-18
Preacher: Jonathan Springthorpe

Though our reading today is only the second half of this passage (vv. 11-18) it would be good to consider the whole of Jesus’ teaching about the shepherd and his flock.
  1. What do the sheep, the sheep pen and stranger represent? How does the story in Ch. 9 provide one example of what this parable is about?
  2. How do the sheep respond to the shepherd? How does this relate to the Pharisees’ difficulty in understanding Jesus?
  3. What does Jesus mean by likening himself to a gate for the sheepfold? Who are these “thieves and robbers”? How is Jesus unlike them?
  4. How does Jesus identify himself with the “good shepherd” (vv. 11-15)? How does Jesus’ death relate to his promise in v. 10?
  5. Who are the “other sheep” he must bring also? What characterizes his flock?
  6. What final claim does Jesus make (vv. 17-18)? Why do his listeners respond as they do? How would you have responded?

Who is this Jesus? The New Adam, Second Adam, Last Adam

1 Corinthians 15:35-58
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture (or you can read it on Bible Gateway). Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. What do you believe happens to someone when they die?
  2. What practical concern undercut belief in the resurrection of the dead for some of the Corinthians (v. 35)?
  3. What are the characteristics of the resurrection body that Christians will receive?
  4. How do the analogies of the seed and the different types of bodies deal with doubts about the resurrection of the dead (vv. 35-44)?
  5. What is the point of the comparison between Adam and Christ (vv. 45- 49; also see 15:21-22)?

Who is this Jesus? Emmanuel!

Matthew 1:18-25
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture (or you can find it on Bible Gateway). Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. How would you feel in Joseph’s place in verse 19? In verses 20-21? What would you say to family and friends? To God?
  2. What reason does Joseph give as to why Jesus was born?
  3. Did these incidents likely strain or strengthen Joseph and Mary’s future marriage relationships? How was God “with them” in all this?
  4. Jesus was called Emmanuel/Immanuel - “God with us”. How do you feel about viewing Jesus as a role model?
  5. When did Jesus become a warm person for you; more than just a name? When did he become God with you?

Advent 2:  John the Baptist Prepares the Way

12/10/2017

Mark 1:1 - 8
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul -mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. Who is the wildest preacher you ever heard? How did you respond to their message?
  2. Why is John’s ministry so popular (vv. 4 -5)? What qualities of a preacher or church (or small group) would bring you all the way into the “desert region” in order to get involved?
  3. Why is John the Baptist so important to the story of Jesus? How well do you think John fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy (vv. 2 -3)?
  4. A couple of weeks ago we talked about the spiritual practice of Confession. When has repentance been especially important in your life? John the Baptist prepared “the way of the Lord.” Who prepared the way of the Lord in your life?

Matthew 4: 9-11
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. When have you been alone in the "desert"? How can it help to know that Jesus has been there?
  2. What is the difference between being lonely and being alone?
  3. If the devil were to target you for temptation, which area of your life would he focus on? Physical temptations, financial temptations, ambition/power, your self-identity, your relationships, other things?
  4. When do you find yourself most vulnerable to the tempter? When you are tired or under stress, when you're alone, after a spiritual high, when you're not expecting it, when you let your mind dwell on certain things?
  5. How do you deal with temptation? Give in to it, fight it off, ask for God's help, beat yourself up with guilt, get your mind off it, talk to someone about it?
  6. What has helped you overcome temptation when it comes? Scripture, telling someone about it, talking yourself out of it, prayer, running away?
We also had a talk from Nigel Bone, the Director of Safe Harbour, an organization which we support.  Again, please excuse the poor sound quality.

Corporate Disciplines: Guidance and Celebration

10/22/2017

John 12:12-19
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Sorry, this week's sermon was not recorded.  Nevertheless, please enjoy reflecting on the study questions, below.

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture, Matthew 6:1-4, 16-21. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. Recall when a party-pooper once killed the festive spirit of your celebration. How did you feel at the time?
  2. 2. What would it take to get you “dancing in the streets” (A wedding? Birth of a baby? A Stanley Cup or Memorial Cup? Peace in the Middle East?
  3. 3. Is David’s rejoicing genuine or symbolic to his people?
  4. Why is Michal’s bitterness, barrenness and relation to Saul significant in this story? What does David’s answer tell us about his character?
  5. What would a worship service led by David be like in our church? How would he be received? What would he have to wear? Why?
  6. In your private worship life, do you treat God with more “reverential awe” or with more “familiarity”?
  7. What objects or worship or means of grace do you “uphold” as sacred? How do you “uphold” them?
