Inward Disciplines: Meditation and Prayer

10/29/2017

Matthew 6:5-15
Preacher:  Carolyn Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. Where do you go when you need to pray? What do you find yourself praying for most often?
  2. Using the Lord’s Prayer as a model, what three things related to God are named first (vv. 9-11)?
  3. What three things related to our needs are expressed next (vv. 11- 13)?
  4. What do verses 12, 14 and 15 say to you about the relationship between forgiving and being forgiven?
  5. In praying, what do you think is your biggest challenge?
  6. In getting serious about your spiritual life, what is something you need to start doing?

Corporate Disciplines: Guidance and Celebration

10/22/2017

John 12:12-19
Preacher:  Jonathan Springthorpe

Sorry, this week's sermon was not recorded.  Nevertheless, please enjoy reflecting on the study questions, below.

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture, Matthew 6:1-4, 16-21. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. Recall when a party-pooper once killed the festive spirit of your celebration. How did you feel at the time?
  2. 2. What would it take to get you “dancing in the streets” (A wedding? Birth of a baby? A Stanley Cup or Memorial Cup? Peace in the Middle East?
  3. 3. Is David’s rejoicing genuine or symbolic to his people?
  4. Why is Michal’s bitterness, barrenness and relation to Saul significant in this story? What does David’s answer tell us about his character?
  5. What would a worship service led by David be like in our church? How would he be received? What would he have to wear? Why?
  6. In your private worship life, do you treat God with more “reverential awe” or with more “familiarity”?
  7. What objects or worship or means of grace do you “uphold” as sacred? How do you “uphold” them?

INWARD PRACTICES:  FASTING AND STUDY

10/15/2017

Matthew 6:1-4, 16-21
Preacher:  Terence Chandra

The recording of this sermon is not yet ready for download.  In the meantime, please  enjoy the study questions, below.

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture, Matthew 6:1-4, 16-21. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. Did you grow up in an “openly religious” home or was religion mostly a private matter, unseen by you until later years?
  2. On a scale of 1 (obligation) - 10 (joy), how would you rate your usual attitude to fasting?
  3. What “religious disciplines” are valued in your circles?
  4. Why do you think fasting and prayer are often put together in the Bible and with Christians through the centuries?
  5. What is the purpose of fasting? In what situations you face might fasting be helpful?

Living Gratefully: Jesus' God-bathed Life

10/8/2017

John 11:38-44
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. Why did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? (v. 42)
  2. How has God shown His care for you in difficult times in your life?
  3. What concerns you the most about dying?
  4. If you compared your spiritual life to Lazarus, where would you be (feeling ill, still in the grave, just being restored to life, alive but wrapped in grave clothes, alive and free of grave clothes)?
  5. How would you live your life differently if you were more confident in God’s love and power in your life?

Living Like Jesus - Introduction

10/1/2017

Transformational Life With God
Matthew 7:13, 14, 21-28
Preacher: John Paul Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. In living your life, do you tend to walk more on the broad road or the narrow road (vv. 13, 14)?
  2. What make the broad road most tempting for you? What makes the narrow road difficult? Rewarding?
  3. How would you describe your spiritual foundation? What would you need to tear down in order to solidify it?
  4. How does the condition of your spiritual foundation compare to what it was like a year ago?
  5. What ‘building materials’ will you use in the coming weeks to build or maintain a firm foundation on “the Rock”?
