Jesus Prays for Us

5/13/2018

John 17:6-19
Preacher: Rebecca Ellis

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:

  1. Who is the focal point of Jesus’ prayer in verses 6-19? Why?
  2. If you were to file a report to the Father on Jesus’ activities, how would you verify verses 6-8?
  3. What is Jesus’ concern in verses 11 & 15? What does he mean by “the name you gave me” (see 8:58; Exod 3:14)?
  4. What does Jesus mean by his request in v. 17? What is its purpose?
  5. This week, whom have you glorified by the way you have lived? How so?
  6. How are your prayers for others like and unlike Jesus’ prayer? Do your prayers reflect the short-term urgent, or the long-term important needs that people have? What can you apply to your prayer skills from this chapter?

The Risen Christ: Empowered to Love

5/6/2018

John 15:9-17
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. How does your relationship with Christ change once you start practicing his example of love?
  2. What is the relationship between obedience and prayer?
  3. As a branch of Christ’s vine, how would you describe the fruit in your life: Grade A-1? Juicy? Green? Wormy? Why?
  4. Specifically, how would you rate yourself on laying down your life for your friends?
  5. Do you feel more like Jesus’ servant or his friend? What helps develop the friendship?

True Vines and Vineyards

4/29/2018

John 15:1-8
Preacher:  Debbie Collicott

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. What plant best describes you now: Towering oak? Weeping willow? Tumbleweed? Crab apple tree? Explain.
  2. If the vine branches were human lives, what pain would be associated with pruning? What tools? What fruit?
  3. Jesus repeats “remain in me, love and bear fruit”. How are these words related? What is “the fruit that will last” (v. 16)?
  4. How do verses 9 & 12 hold together? How is love the essential dynamic of the Christian life?

Being Well-Shepherded

4/22/2018

John 10:1-18
Preacher: Jonathan Springthorpe

Though our reading today is only the second half of this passage (vv. 11-18) it would be good to consider the whole of Jesus’ teaching about the shepherd and his flock.
  1. What do the sheep, the sheep pen and stranger represent? How does the story in Ch. 9 provide one example of what this parable is about?
  2. How do the sheep respond to the shepherd? How does this relate to the Pharisees’ difficulty in understanding Jesus?
  3. What does Jesus mean by likening himself to a gate for the sheepfold? Who are these “thieves and robbers”? How is Jesus unlike them?
  4. How does Jesus identify himself with the “good shepherd” (vv. 11-15)? How does Jesus’ death relate to his promise in v. 10?
  5. Who are the “other sheep” he must bring also? What characterizes his flock?
  6. What final claim does Jesus make (vv. 17-18)? Why do his listeners respond as they do? How would you have responded?

Living a Doubt-Free Life

4/8/2018

John 20:19-31
Preacher:  Carolyn Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture. Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1.  Why are the disciples fearful now?
  2. Of all the things Jesus must have said, why does John record “peace be with you” three times (vv. 19,21,26)?  How does this relate to their fears? To their being sent?
  3. How does Thomas’ personality compare to Mary’s (v.13)? To the other disciples(vv. 9,19)
  4. How does Jesus deal with Thomas’ doubt (v. 29)? What is significant about the way Thomas responds?
  5. What is the author’s purpose for writing this gospel (vv. 30-31; 21:24-25)?
  6. Where could you use Jesus peace now?
  7. What doubts or questions about God are you struggling with? What have you found helpful in dealing with doubts?

Who Is this Jesus? Light of the World

3/11/2018

John 8:12-20
Preacher:  John Paul Westin

Take out your Bible and look up the scripture (or you can read it on Bible Gateway.) Over the next week we invite you to sit down (by yourself or even better) with your small group, a friend, family member or soul-mate, and (think about) discuss the following questions:
  1. What is your most vivid memory as a child in a dark place (cave, tunnel, power blackout)? What feelings do you associate with darkness?
  2. What is Jesus really claiming in v. 12? What is the promise? What does Jesus mean by “light” and “darkness”?
  3. With what does Jesus bolster his claim (see 5:31-40)? What does it matter that Jesus knows where he comes from (vv. 14, 21-23; see 7:41-42)?
  4. What does the Pharisees’ question in v. 19 reveal about their relationship with the Father?
  5. What is at stake in this whole discussion (v. 24)? Why does everything hinge on who Jesus is (v. 25) and who sent him (vv. 16, 18, 26, 29)?
